- In particular, breast augmentation surgery can be a touchy subject for many people. However, it is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in Korea. And many people travel to Seoul in order to get it done by some of the best surgeons in the world. Still, since it can often be stigmatized, it can be hard to get information about how it works. That’s why we are writing a preliminary overview of how breast augmentation works in Korea. So you can get informed and decide if this procedure is for you!
- What breast augmentation can do for you
Indeed, after a breast augmentation surgery you can expect your breasts to have improved volume. As well as more fullness and better projection. Additionally, improved volume in your breast can help balance you out with your hip contours. In fact, many people seek out breast augmentation as a means of either balancing their two breasts with each other, or to find a better balance in the appearance of their body overall. Moreover, many people seek out this procedure as a means of breast reconstruction. As after having a mastectomy or breast injury their original breast can be damaged or even completely removed.
However, as with all surgeries, there are some risks involved. These include:
-scarring
-infection
-implant rupture
-wrinkling of the skin around the implant area
-breast pain
-and more
Therefore, it is extremely important to find a good surgeon with good skills and a lot of experience. That’s why traveling to Korea for breast augmentation is such a great option! What’s more is, these doctors are highly specialized in what they do so you know you’ll be getting the highest quality treatment!
- Implant Options
Before going into the procedure, you’ll first have a consultation with your surgeon to decide on how big you want your breasts to be and what shape you want. As well, at this time you’ll choose what implants you want based on your preferences for shape, feel, and your specific body. In fact, in Korea doctors have a variety of breast augmentation implants that are very safe. So you have numerous options when it comes to implant type, which include:
-Saline
This implant utilizes sterile salt water to provide volume to your breasts. As such, if the implant leaks or ruptures, the water will be absorbed by the body and naturally expelled. Indeed, this type of breast augmentation implant provides a uniform shape and feel. And it is recommended that you be 18+ to receive.
-Structured Saline
Notably, a structured saline implant functions in a similar way to a normal saline implant. However, it provides a more natural feel to the breast afterwards. As well, these two implants involve the surgeon placing the implant lining into your breasts first, then filling it after placement.
-Silicone
As a silicone breast augmentation implant involves a gel silicone, if it leaks you should meet with your surgeon/doctor as soon as possible. Indeed, the silicone implant provides a more natural breast tissue feel than saline implants. But since it won’t collapse when it leaks, it’s important to regularly visit your surgeon for check ups. So you can rest easy knowing your body is safe. Since silicone implants are a bit more of a hassle, you must be 21+ to receive them.
-Round
In particular, a round implant gives a fuller more projected look to the breasts. As well, these implants do not rotate so you can rest assured that your breasts will always look exactly how you want them to!
-Smooth
On the other hand, smooth implants provide a more natural texture, but tend to move around and rotate a little. As well, they may ripple a bit underneath the skin and cause minor wrinkling.
-Textured
Additionally, a textured implant is also less likely to move around and rotate.
- The Procedure
Once you’ve picked out your implants, it’s time for the procedure. Typically, a breast augmentation surgery is done under general anesthesia. As well, the surgeon will make an incision in your breast area to insert the implant and place it in the best place. However, when it comes to incisions there are three options surgeons typically choose from.
- An incision at your areolar edge (periareolar): this incision is done around your nipple area
- An incision at the fold under your breast (inframammary fold): this incision is done underneath your breast
- An incision in your armpit area (axillary): this incision is done in your lower armpit area
Where the doctors chooses to make the incision is based on your body type, your preferences, and the type of implant/how large your implant is. And all of this should be agreed upon and you should be informed of during your consultations with your particular surgeon. Occasionally, a belly button incision is done, but this poses many issues so many surgeons recommend against it.
After the incision is made the doctor will then insert your chosen breast augmentation implant into your breast. Again, the type of insertion should be first talked about and agreed upon during your consultations with the surgeon. And the types of insertions are as follows:
-Under your pec (submuscular): this insertion involves inserting the implant behind your pectoral muscles
-Over your pec (submammary/glandular): this insertion involves inserting the implant on top of your pectoral muscles but still underneath your natural breast tissue
Additionally, once the insertion has taken place the surgeon will typically close the incision with sutures or skin adhesives. Then these will either naturally dispelled into the body or you will go back to get them removed.
- Post-op Recovery
After the breast augmentation surgery has been completed, the doctor will bandage your breast area up to provide support to your new breasts. Most patients are cleared to leave 1 hour after the surgery has been completed. As well, they’ll give you some pain meds to take for the first few days to help with the soreness. Additionally, some surgeons will give antibiotics for your to take as a preventative measure against infections. Typically, after 1-5 days the acute pain in your breasts should subside (and the pain meds will help). Then the soreness and swelling of your breasts should gradually decrease over the course of 4 weeks. Above all, it’s very important to avoid strenuous activity for at least 2 weeks after your procedure. It’s also important to keep your blood pressure low during this time as well, which means taking it easy for awhile!
