What does acne treatment in Seoul involve?
Acne treatment in Seoul usually combines in-clinic procedures, such as extraction, peels, PDT (often sold as “Aqua PDT”) and acne lasers, with prescription creams or pills. Procedures can calm active breakouts during a short trip, but acne is a long-term condition. Most people need at least 6–8 weeks of treatment at home to see lasting control.
Who is acne treatment in Korea right for?
A trip works best for mild to moderate breakouts (blackheads, whiteheads, red pimples) and a clear plan for home. Be more careful, or wait, if:
- You are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Several acne medicines are avoided in pregnancy, including isotretinoin and tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline.
- You have deep, painful nodules or cysts. That is severe acne. It usually needs months of prescription medicine with a doctor at home.
- You take, or recently took, isotretinoin. Many procedures are still possible, but fully ablative lasers and mechanical dermabrasion are not recommended during treatment.
- Your skin is tanned or sunburned, or your trip is mostly outdoors. Some light treatments mean staying out of the sun afterwards.
What do Seoul clinics do for active breakouts?
Clinics often stack two or three of these in one visit, for example scaling, extraction, then light.
| Option | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Extraction and scaling | Softens the skin, then clears clogged pores with sterile tools. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says extraction should only be done by a doctor. | Blackheads, whiteheads |
| Chemical peel | Removes dead skin cells and excess oil that clog pores | Clogged pores, mild breakouts |
| PDT (often “Aqua PDT”) | A light-sensitizing solution goes on the skin, then a light or laser activates it | Inflamed pimples, oily skin |
| Laser, light and RF microneedling | Light calms acne inflammation; RF microneedling heats the oil glands | Mild to moderate acne |
| Steroid injection | Shrinks one large, painful spot | A few severe spots |
| Prescription creams and pills | Retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, antibiotics, hormonal options, isotretinoin | All acne; this is what keeps it controlled |
Procedures give you a head start; medicine prevents new breakouts. The AAD notes that light treatments rarely clear acne alone, so a good plan uses both.
What is Aqua PDT, and does PDT work?
PDT (photodynamic therapy) means a light-sensitizing solution is applied, left to absorb, then activated with light. It aims to calm inflamed pimples and reduce oil. “Aqua PDT” is a clinic menu name, not a medical term. Clinics often use it for a cleansing aqua peel plus PDT, but the solution, light and contact time vary, so ask exactly what you are getting.
The evidence is real but modest. In one study cited by the AAD, people had 50% fewer spots at the end of a 4-week course and 72% fewer twelve weeks later. A Cochrane review of light therapies was more cautious and rated the evidence as low certainty.
After PDT you need to avoid sunlight for 48 hours. Plan indoor days, not a palace walking tour.
Is an acne laser in Seoul worth it?
It can help as part of a plan. According to the AAD, several sessions work better than one, results are often best weeks after the last session, and nobody can predict who will respond. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year are common.
Many Seoul clinics also offer RF microneedling with insulated needles aimed at the oil glands (Agnes is one device name you will see). A small trial in 25 people with moderate to severe acne used three sessions a month apart and found fewer lesions and less oil. Encouraging, but small.
If your main concern is marks or pitted scars rather than active pimples, see our guide to acne scar treatments.
What about isotretinoin and other prescriptions?
Common options are topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid and topical antibiotics, plus pills such as doxycycline, birth control pills, or spironolactone for some women. The AAD says it takes at least 6 to 8 weeks to see fewer breakouts.
Isotretinoin is for severe nodular acne that hasn’t responded to other treatment. A course takes about four to five months, with monthly check-ins and blood tests for cholesterol and liver function. It can cause severe birth defects, so anyone who can become pregnant needs pregnancy tests and must not get pregnant during treatment (in the US this runs through the iPLEDGE program). Dryness, sun sensitivity and, for some people, mood changes are reported. A doctor at home has to prescribe and monitor the course.
How many sessions, and what can one trip do?
In 5 to 10 days you can get a diagnosis, one or two procedure sessions and a home plan. You won’t finish a course of light treatment or see the full effect of new medicine before you fly.
- Early in the trip: consultation and a first procedure, such as extraction plus PDT or a peel.
- A few days later: a second session if the doctor agrees, and a check on any new prescription.
- At home: daily treatment for at least 6–8 weeks, with a local doctor for follow-up. Get product names and doses in writing, in English.
Downtime, side effects and risks
- Common: redness, swelling and stinging after lights, lasers and PDT, usually mild and short-lived.
- Less common: burns, blisters, skin color changes and scarring. Darker skin is more prone to dark marks after inflammation, so ask about gentler settings.
- Isotretinoin can make acne worse for 1 to 2 months before it clears.
- Sun: retinoids and isotretinoin make you burn faster. Use SPF 30 or higher daily.
Book your last procedure at least two days before you fly, so the clinic can check your skin.
What decides the price of acne treatment in Seoul?
Clinics price acne treatment per step and per session, so two quotes can look very different. What moves the price: how many steps are stacked in one visit, the device and photosensitizer used, one session versus a package, the area treated (face only, or back and chest too), and whether the consultation and prescriptions are included. Ask for each step and the device name in writing, and check that any package matches the visits you can actually make.

FAQ
Can acne be cured in one trip to Seoul?
No. A trip can calm active breakouts and set up a plan, but acne is a long-term condition. Most people need at least 6 to 8 weeks of daily treatment at home to see fewer breakouts.
What is Aqua PDT?
It is a clinic menu name, not a medical term. It usually pairs a cleansing aqua peel with photodynamic therapy, where a light-sensitizing solution is activated by light. Ask the clinic exactly what is included.
Do I need to avoid the sun after PDT?
Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology advises avoiding sunlight for 48 hours after photodynamic therapy, so plan indoor time and book PDT at least two days before you fly.
Can I start isotretinoin in Korea?
A dermatologist in Seoul can assess whether you need it. But a course lasts about four to five months with monthly check-ins and tests, so you need a doctor at home to monitor it.
Is acne laser treatment the same as acne scar treatment?
No. Acne lasers and light target active pimples and oil. Scar treatments remodel skin after breakouts heal. For scars, see our acne scar treatments guide.
