What is LDM water-drop lifting?

LDM (Local Dynamic Micro-massage) is a German ultrasound technology that switches rapidly between high frequencies to give the skin a gentle micro-massage. In Korea, clinics market the LDM treatment as water-drop lifting. It is mainly used to soothe, hydrate and calm skin, often after lasers. The evidence comes from small studies, and any firming is mild.

What does LDM stand for, and how does it work?

LDM stands for Local Dynamic Micro-massage. It was developed by Wellcomet, a German company. A handpiece glides over the skin with a contact gel and sends high-frequency ultrasound into it. The key idea is the switching: the device changes frequency every few milliseconds.

The classic setup pairs 3 MHz and 10 MHz. Newer “triple” models use 1, 3 and 10 MHz or 3, 10 and 19 MHz. Lower frequencies reach deeper and higher ones stay near the surface, so switching lets one pass work at several depths.

The company’s researchers describe the effect as a mechanical micro-massage of skin cells. They propose that it calms inflammation and slows the enzymes that break down collagen. Treat those as working theories. They haven’t been confirmed by independent research.

LDM is not a focused, heat-based lifting device. Those work differently and are covered on our Shurink page.

What is an LDM facial used for in Seoul?

  • Calming red, sensitive or irritated skin
  • Hydration and a smoother, plumper look before an event
  • Recovery after lasers, peels or injections, as a soothing last step
  • Swelling and bruising after surgery, for example after nose surgery
  • Mild firming and pore refinement, as one part of a wider plan
  • Support for acne-prone skin, next to medical acne care

The common thread is gentle care with no recovery time. As an LDM skin treatment, it is about skin quality. Despite the “lifting” name, it won’t lift skin that has truly dropped.

How strong is the evidence for LDM?

Honestly, modest. Here is what we could find in published research:

Study What was tested Size and design What it found
2012, four European centers LDM at 3 and 10 MHz, 8–12 sessions, twice a week 39 adults, not randomized, not blinded Small gains in fine and coarse wrinkles, pores and firmness. No side effects reported beyond brief redness
2024, Korea Daily LDM for 5 days after nose surgery 48 patients, half given ice packs instead, retrospective Swelling and bruising cleared in fewer days than with ice packs
2025, two clinics Triple-frequency LDM for acne, up to 12 sessions 22 patients, retrospective Acne scores improved. Only 9 patients had follow-up
2021, Korea A different brand of dual-frequency ultrasound for redness from rosacea and acne 26 patients, no control group Less redness and better barrier readings. Sponsored by the device maker

Two things to keep in mind. First, these are small studies, and we found no large randomized controlled trial. Second, a scientist from the company that makes LDM co-wrote several of them. That doesn’t make the results wrong, but it means independent confirmation is still missing.

Our read: LDM is a reasonable, gentle add-on. It is not a replacement for proven lifting devices, boosters or surgery.

Who suits LDM, and who should skip it?

LDM tends to suit you if you have sensitive, redness-prone or dehydrated skin, if you want care with no downtime during a trip, if you are recovering from a laser or surgery, or if you dislike needles.

Skip it, or check with the clinic first, if:

  • You expect a visible lift of sagging skin. LDM won’t deliver that.
  • You are pregnant, or you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device.
  • You have an active infection, an open wound or a new, changing mole in the area. A changing mole needs a doctor’s check first.

Ask the clinic for the device’s own list of reasons not to treat. It is short, but it matters.

LDM vs HydraFacial, skin boosters and focused ultrasound

LDM HydraFacial Skin booster Focused ultrasound lifting
How it works Switching high-frequency ultrasound massage Suction cleansing, exfoliation and serum infusion Injections of hydrating or repair products Focused ultrasound heats deeper layers
Needles? No No Yes No
Main goal Calm, hydrate, recover Clean, smooth, glow Skin quality and hydration Tightening and lifting
Downtime None expected None to minimal Bumps and pinpoint bruising for 1–2 days Redness and tenderness
Best role Add-on or recovery care Maintenance facial A course for skin quality Early sagging

Many people combine them. A booster improves the skin from inside, and LDM is often added on the same day as a calming step. Our skin boosters guide explains the injectable side.

How many LDM sessions, and how do they fit into a trip?

The study courses were long. The 2012 study used 8–12 sessions, twice a week, about 20 minutes each. The nose-surgery study used daily sessions for five days. One session can leave skin calmer and better hydrated looking, but the published results came from full courses.

That shapes your options on a trip:

  1. Single add-on: one LDM session after a laser or booster visit, for soothing.
  2. Short series: two or three sessions a week during a one- to two-week stay.
  3. Recovery block: daily sessions for a few days after surgery, if your surgeon agrees.

Ask the clinic how they sequence LDM with lasers and injections on the same day, since protocols vary.

Downtime and side effects

  • No downtime expected. You can usually go straight back to your day.
  • Some people look slightly pink for a short time afterward.
  • The studies above reported no serious side effects.
  • Nothing about LDM itself stops you flying.

What decides the price of an LDM session in Seoul?

Clinics usually sell LDM as a single session, as a package of several, or as an add-on to another treatment. What moves the price: whether it’s stand-alone or bundled, the device generation (dual or triple frequency), how many minutes you get, which areas are covered (face only, or neck and eyes too), and whether a mask or serum is included. “Water-drop” style names are used loosely, so ask which device is used, how long the session is and how many sessions a package includes. That way you compare like with like.

FAQ

What does LDM stand for?

Local Dynamic Micro-massage. It is an ultrasound technology from the German company Wellcomet that switches quickly between high frequencies.

Is LDM the same as focused ultrasound lifting?

No. Focused ultrasound devices such as HIFU heat deeper layers for tightening. LDM uses gentler ultrasound across the skin to calm and hydrate it, with no recovery time.

Does LDM water-drop lifting really lift?

Not in the way surgery or focused ultrasound does. Small studies found modest improvements in fine lines, pores and firmness after a full course. It is best seen as skin care, not a lift.

How many LDM sessions do I need?

Studies used courses of 8 to 12 sessions, twice a week. One session can leave skin calmer and better hydrated looking, but the published results came from full courses.

Is there downtime after an LDM facial?

No downtime is expected. Some people look slightly pink for a short time, and you can usually go straight back to your day.
