SCS Answer Center: Quick Expert Answers for International Patients
This Answer Center provides clear, concise explanations for the most common questions about cosmetic surgery, dermatology, hair transplantation, dental procedures, and medical tourism in Korea. Each answer is written for international visitors who want trustworthy guidance before planning their beauty journey to Seoul.
What Are the Basics of Medical Tourism in Korea?
Most visitors stay in Seoul for seven to ten days after facial cosmetic procedures because swelling, taping removal, and follow up checks are usually needed during this period. Rhinoplasty, facelift, and fat grafting often need at least one week for early recovery and monitoring. Body procedures such as liposuction may need ten to fourteen days for bruising and compression checks. Non surgical treatments usually need one to two days.
See more guidanceSpring and autumn offer mild temperatures and comfortable humidity, which many visitors prefer for recovery. Winter is popular for surgery because people tend to spend more time indoors. Summer is the busiest season for dermatology treatments but higher humidity may increase swelling for some procedures. Clinics operate year round, so timing should match your schedule and recovery preference.
See more guidanceCosts vary by procedure type, complexity, and the experience of the medical team. Most clinics in Korea provide clear itemized quotations after consultation, which include the procedure fee, anesthesia, operating facility use, and follow up visits. Combined surgeries or longer operations may cost more. Travel and accommodation are priced separately.
See more guidanceComfortable clothing, light meals, and short walking distances support early recovery. Book accommodation near your clinic to minimize travel time. Allow enough days for follow up checks and avoid heavy lifting or long outings during the first days of healing. Many visitors plan simple indoor activities until swelling settles.
See more guidanceAreas such as Gangnam, Sinsa, and Apgujeong offer easy access to major clinics and pharmacies. Many visitors choose serviced residences or modern apartments for comfort and privacy during recovery. Staying close to your clinic reduces travel time for follow up visits and helps with convenience in the first few days.
See more guidanceWhat is a KHIDI-registered medical tourism facilitator in Korea?
A KHIDI-registered facilitator is an agency legally licensed by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, the government body under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, to coordinate treatment for foreign patients. Registration is not optional marketing language — under Korean law, only registered facilitators may legally arrange medical care for international patients, and each holds a registration number that can be checked against the public registry.
What registration actually obliges an agency to do matters more than the badge itself. Registered facilitators must refer patients only to licensed healthcare providers, carry liability insurance, and report their activity to KHIDI annually. If something goes wrong, there is a formal route to raise it. An unregistered operator — including many overseas "consultants" who advertise Korean surgery — carries none of these obligations, and you have no recourse through the Korean system.
SCS operates as a KHIDI-registered facilitator under registration A-2016-01-01-2642, held by its legal entity East Meets West Inc., and coordinates the full journey rather than isolated pieces of it.
How do I find someone to arrange my surgery in Korea?
Start by asking any agency for its KHIDI facilitator registration number, then check it. A legitimate Korean facilitator will give you the number without hesitation, because it is public information. Anyone who deflects, offers a business licence instead, or says registration "isn't necessary" for your case is telling you something useful.
Beyond the licence, the questions that separate agencies are practical ones. Ask who you will actually be speaking to on the ground and in what language, whether they accompany you into consultations or just book them, what happens if the surgeon recommends a different procedure than the one you enquired about, and how they are paid. That last one is worth asking directly — agency fee structures vary, and understanding it tells you whose interests the recommendation serves.
To answer that question for ourselves: SCS is paid by the clinics, not by patients. There is no fee to you for the coordination, and no charge that sits on top of what you pay the provider. We are registered with KHIDI and have coordinated patients from more than 20 countries, handling the full arc from first enquiry through to departure rather than handing you off between providers.
Can I get cosmetic surgery in Korea as an American?
Yes. There is no residency requirement and no Korean insurance needed — international patients pay providers directly, and US citizens can currently enter Korea for short visits without a full visa. Entry requirements do change, so confirm the current K-ETA position for your passport before you book flights rather than assuming last year's rules still apply.
The practical constraints are about time, not eligibility. Most facial procedures need roughly ten to fourteen days in Korea to cover consultation, surgery, and the follow-up check before flying, and that window is the thing most American patients underestimate when they plan around annual leave. Remote consultation before you travel is normal and lets you settle procedure options and timing while still at home.
The other consideration is what happens after you land back in the US. Ask any agency or clinic directly what follow-up looks like once you have left Korea, and get the answer before you commit — it varies considerably.
What Should I Expect From Consultation Through Recovery?
Korean consultations focus on understanding your goals, assessing facial or body structure, and reviewing your suitability. Doctors examine your features, discuss methods, and explain realistic outcomes with expected recovery. Many clinics use imaging tools to show predicted changes. Clear communication is a core part of the process.
See more guidanceOn treatment day you check in, review your goals, and confirm the planned approach with the doctor. Surgical cases include precise markings for symmetry. After the procedure nurses monitor you, explain aftercare instructions, and schedule follow up visits. Most patients return to their accommodation the same day unless the clinic keeps them briefly for monitoring.
See more guidanceMost facial surgeries have noticeable swelling for five to seven days, with refinement over the next several weeks. Eyelid procedures settle faster. Rhinoplasty swelling lasts longer but is socially acceptable within one week. Body procedures may involve soreness and bruising for ten to fourteen days. Dermatology treatments often need one to three days for mild redness to calm.
See more guidanceSwelling usually peaks during the first two or three days and then steadily reduces. By day seven most patients feel comfortable being outdoors. Structural surgeries like rhinoplasty and deep plane facelift may have mild residual swelling for longer. Head elevation and gentle rest help the process.
See more guidanceRevision surgery is considered when previous results show asymmetry, under correction, or over correction. Doctors evaluate healing, scar tissue, and structural support before proposing a revision plan. Timing depends on how the tissue has settled after the first procedure.

See more guidanceIs KHIDI registration important when choosing a plastic surgery agency in Korea?
Yes, and it is the single easiest thing to verify before you commit to anyone. KHIDI is the South Korean government body that licenses medical tourism facilitators. A registered agency is legally required to refer patients only to licensed healthcare providers, carry liability insurance, and remain accountable through a formal complaint mechanism. An unregistered operator carries none of that, however polished the website looks.
The check takes a minute. Ask for the facilitator registration number, which follows a format like A-2016-01-01-2642, and verify it against the KHIDI registry rather than taking a screenshot at face value. Be aware that a Korean business registration number is not the same thing, and is sometimes offered in its place.
SCS holds registration A-2016-01-01-2642 under East Meets West Inc. Whether or not you work with us, ask every agency on your shortlist the same question — the ones that cannot answer it have narrowed your list for you.
Is it safe to get plastic surgery in Korea?
Safety in Korea is not a property of the country — it is a property of the specific surgeon, facility, and anaesthesia arrangement you end up with. Korea has genuine structural advantages: extremely high procedure volume, a board certification system you can check, and a legal requirement for CCTV in operating rooms that patients can request footage from. None of that helps if you book without verifying which surgeon is actually operating.
The risk that international patients most often miss is not the surgery itself but substitute surgery, where someone other than the surgeon you consulted performs the procedure. It is illegal, and the operating-room camera requirement exists largely because of it. The protections are practical: confirm your surgeon's board certification, get the operating surgeon named in writing before the day, and ask who administers anaesthesia and whether they remain present throughout.
Ask those three questions of any clinic, through an agency or directly. A clinic that answers them clearly is demonstrating something a marketing page cannot. This is general information rather than medical advice — decisions about your suitability for any procedure belong with a qualified surgeon.
How Do Different Korean Cosmetic Procedures Compare?
A deep plane facelift adjusts deeper supporting layers for long lasting lift in the mid face and jawline. A SMAS facelift focuses on the superficial muscular layer for moderate improvement. A mini lift targets early signs of aging with shorter downtime. The best method depends on skin laxity and how much change is needed.
See more guidanceRejuran uses polynucleotide to support skin repair, elasticity, and long term texture improvement. HA skin boosters focus on deep hydration and glow by restoring the skin’s moisture balance. Rejuran improves the foundation of the skin while HA boosters enhance radiance and smoothness.
See more guidancePico laser targets pigmentation with ultra fast pulses and minimal downtime. It is effective for freckles and uneven tone. Fraxel uses fractional resurfacing to treat texture, scars, and deeper lines. Pico is best for pigmentation while Fraxel is preferred for resurfacing and scarring.
See more guidanceLiposuction removes fat through a surgical method and creates more noticeable contour changes. Fat melting injections break down small pockets of fat gradually over several sessions. Liposuction is suited for larger areas while injections are best for small contour refinements.
See more guidanceFat grafting uses your own fat to restore volume and can provide long lasting enhancement. Fillers give immediate results with a shorter duration. Fat grafting is ideal for larger volume needs while fillers are suited for precise contouring or smaller adjustments.
See more guidanceNon surgical nose shaping uses dermal filler to improve height, symmetry, and contour without downtime. Rhinoplasty changes bone and cartilage for permanent structural correction. Fillers suit mild to moderate refinements while rhinoplasty is needed for major shape changes.
See more guidanceResults depend on the treatment. Skin boosters usually last several months. Rejuran supports long term improvement when done in a series. Laser results vary by concern but can last longer when paired with sun protection and a stable skincare routine. Maintenance sessions help extend durability.

What makes a deep plane facelift different from other facelifts?
A deep plane facelift lifts and repositions the deeper facial structures responsible for sagging, including the midface, nasolabial folds, and jawline. Unlike traditional facelifts that tighten the skin or pull the SMAS, the deep plane method works beneath this layer, releasing key ligaments to restore youthful volume and natural contour without creating tension. The result is a remarkably natural, long-lasting rejuvenation of 10–15 years. Korea is recognized for its refined techniques, advanced anatomical precision, and elegant aesthetic outcomes, making it a global destination for deep plane surgery.
Read the full deep plane guide →Double eyelid surgery in Korea usually involves a short initial healing period where swelling and mild bruising are most noticeable in the first 2–3 days, with stitches commonly removed around 5–7 days. Many patients feel comfortable resuming normal activities like work or light social outings within 10–14 days, though full tissue settling and refinement of the eyelid crease may continue over the next 2–3 months as swelling completely resolves and the crease becomes natural looking. Elevating the head, cold compresses, and protective care support smoother early recovery.
